One of our faculty members from the Department of Mining and Mineral Extraction. Assistant Profesor Özkan ATEŞ and Assistant Profesor Erdem GÜNDOĞDU participated as a researcher and was conducted by Prof. from the Department of Geological Engineering. Professor Süha ÖZDEN was entitled to receive TÜBİTAK 1007 (Public Institutions Research and Development Projects Support Program) project support, with a total budget of approximately 120 million TL and an individual budget of 7 million TL for our university.
In the project that will be carried out under the coordination of TÜBİTAK-MAM (123G003-13); 14 conducting universities (Afyon Kocatepe University, Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Çukurova University, Dokuz Eylül University, Eskişehir Osmangazi University, Fırat University, Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University, Kocaeli University, Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University, Pamukkale University, Sivas Cumhuriyet University and Van Yüzüncü Yıl University), 21 institutions (MTA, AFAD, Union of Municipalities of Turkey, supported and supporting universities) and 98 scientists will take part.
Within the scope of the two-year project titled "Determination of Paleoseismological Characteristics of Turkey's Active Faults"; 113 fault segments with a total length of 3432 km will be studied, and our University will conduct excavations to reveal the earthquake history of the Edincik, Bandırma, Zeytinbağ, Yalova, Orhangazi, Altınova and Yalakdere Faults in the Marmara Region and date the old earthquakes with C14 and OSL methods. Conducted by Prof. Dr. In the project team led by Süha Özden; Assoc. Dr. Savaş Topal (Pamukkale Univ), Dr. Lecturer Member Özkan Ateş (ÇOMÜ), Dr. Lecturer Member Erdem Gündoğdu (ÇOMÜ), PhD Student Seray Çınar Yıldız (ÇOMÜ) and graduate students will take part.
Within the scope of the project, detailed mapping of these faults will be made with a high-resolution UAV set (GNSS-CORS system) and a direct contribution will be made to the renewal of the Active Fault Map of Turkey (MTA, 2013). At the same time, the recurrence interval for possible major earthquakes on the fault segments, the date of the last major earthquake, the fault slip rate and the estimated magnitude of the largest earthquake that may occur will be revealed.
Accepting the project team, ÇOMÜ Rector Prof. Dr. While R. Cüneyt Erenoğlu signed the contract of the project, which started on September 1, 2023, they stated that they could support the UAV studies of the project with the student.
On September 11, 2023, TÜBİTAK President Prof. Dr. The project actually started with the Zoom meeting held with the participation of Hasan Mandal.
