Within the scope of the July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day commemorative activities, Çan Vocational School of Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University organized an online panel titled "Among the Heroes of July 15: Gazi Turgut ASLAN."
The program, held via Microsoft Teams and moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatih GÜLER, was attended by the academic and administrative staff of the school. During the panel, the life, professional career, public service, and experiences of Gazi Turgut ASLAN (Head of the Counter-Terrorism Department of the Turkish National Police) during the night of the July 15 coup attempt were discussed. A documentary video presented as part of the program highlighted the events that unfolded during the coup attempt, as well as Gazi Turgut ASLAN's distinguished service in the fight against terrorism, his devotion to the nation, and his exemplary courage.
During the panel, it was emphasized that the events of July 15 constituted not merely an attempted coup but also an attack against the democratic constitutional order, the national will, and the constitutional institutions of the Republic of Türkiye. It was further noted that the unity, solidarity, and determination demonstrated by the Turkish nation in resisting the coup attempt represent one of the most significant turning points in the country's democratic history.
Delivering the closing remarks, Prof. Dr. Ahmet TUNÇ, Director of Çan Vocational School, shared his reflections on the historical and societal significance of July 15. Prof. Dr. Ahmet TUNÇ stated that Gazi Turgut Aslan, through his strong sense of duty, courage, self-sacrifice, and patriotism, occupies a distinguished place in the collective memory of the Turkish nation. He further emphasized that the resilience and heroism demonstrated by Aslan on the night of July 15 constitute an exemplary legacy that should be passed on to future generations. Stressing the importance of such events in preserving national memory, strengthening democratic awareness, and fostering historical consciousness among younger generations, Prof. Dr. Ahmet TUNÇ concluded his remarks by commemorating the martyrs with mercy and gratitude and expressing the nation's appreciation to its veterans.
