History of Çan

resim161918

There is no exact information about Çan's founding date. The presence of some ancient ruins within the district borders shows that this place has been a settlement since ancient times. It is said that the Ancient City of Kallikolone, near the village of Etili, was the place where a beauty contest was held between the three goddesses. Homer also writes that Ares made the Trojans attack from this hill. The region, known as Sergis during the Roman period, was annexed to the Ottoman lands in the 14th century.

With a law enacted on August 1, 1945, it was separated from Biga district and today's Çan District was formed together with Etili Subdistrict, which was previously affiliated with Bayramiç district.

Since the settlement of the local people, who earned their living from animal husbandry in ancient times, was located in a hollow valley and there was a dense fog, they wore bells for each of their animals in order to find them in foggy weather, and all the bell sellers in the region came here once a week due to the need for large amounts of bells. A market began to be established under the name "Market". For this reason, it is said that the region began to be known as Çan Pazarı, and this is how the name Çan was formed over time.

Şemsettin Sami writes in ''Kâmus'ül Alâm'' that in the 19th century, Çan was a township attached to the central district of the independent Biga Sanjak. Çan, which was subjected to Greek occupation and heavy destruction during the War of Independence - in 1921 - was liberated from the occupation on September 23, 1922.
